On Saturday, 9-3-2011, my mother & I visited my aunt in Greenville, Ms. We decided to get hot tamale's from Doe's since we hadn't had any in years, and we like hot tamale's and eat them often. My aunt called Doe's and ordered them at 4:45pm, then we left immediately to pick them up. We got to Doe's at 5:00pm and they were ready. My aunt paid for them and we left. The hot tamale's were warm, tied in bundles of three in a large metal coffee can with foil over the top of the can with a Doe's logo sticker on the foil. The coffee can was on newspaper inside a cardboard box. We went straight back to my aunts house and ate hot tamale's. My mother ate four hot tamale's and I ate six. My mother did not eat more than that because she said they did not taste right, like they were old. They did not look like hot tamale's should look and I have never seen any that looked like those. Instead of a tan or light brown color they were dark grey. The hot tamale's were in a thin gravy like juice that filled the can half full. I like my hot tamale's very wet so I spooned the juice over them on my plate. At about 6:30am the next morning my stomach started severly cramping and hurting, and I was nauseated with a temperature. The pain was so bad I was sweating and shaking. My stomach was very loud with the rolling and cramps. I had severe diarrhea that was so bad it was like water. All of this went on steady from Sunday morning and all through the day and night all day Monday. The stomach pain and cramps were extremely bad and worse than I have ever had with any stomach virus or even the flu. Several times I considered going to the hospital but kept thinking it would get better. I was in the bathroom on the commode for almost 48 hours straight without being able to get off the commode all night long to go to bed. After deciding it was not going to get any better, Monday afternoon my mother went to Walmart and got Imodium AD. About an hour after taking the Imodium AD the diarrhea started to get a little better. The diarrhea, stomach cramps and pain did not stop completely until Friday afternoon, 9-9-2011. I have never in my life had any stomach problem that felt just like this, it was MUCH worse than any I have ever had. I think I had food poisoning as a result of eating the juice that came with the hot tamale's because my mother was not sick and she only ate the hot tamale's without any juice. I ate the juice on mine and I think that was the difference. But the color of the hot tamale's was very strange. My mother is a nurse and she also thinks I had food poisoning. I talked to Kenneth Ray in your office on 9-9-2011 about this and he was very helpful. I was impressed with his promptness on returning my phone call and appreciate all of his help. Please call me at 601-353-9897 if I need to answer any other questions. Thank You, Tina K. Jones.

InvestigationHistory
Visited facility an spoke with the mgr and employees about this complaint then reviewed with mgr their procedure with preparation, cooking, holding and sell prep of tamales. Tamale ingredients are mixed and placed in the freezer until next day. On day two product is placed in cooler. Onced thawed in cooler, product is cooked and held at hot holding temp(167F today when checked). Once customer orders, tamales area pulled and placed in a sanitized can over with foil for customers pick up. On walk-through inspection, temp was good on hot holding and cold holding items inside cooler. There were no leftovers on hands. Mgr did acknowledge proper leftovers holding time and temp. Hot tamales hot holding did appear light in color. However, through observation, this in not uncommon with tamale makers. I did recommend that the cans be abandon since approved plastic containers were available and on hand for customer orders. I also explained any cooling process when needed. The facility checked out fine.
