Sewage Flow Rate and "Low Flow" Ideas

Reducing Toilet Reservoir Volume and/or Flow

Toilet inserts (dams that block off portions of the reservoir) can be purchased at most hardware stores. Make sure that the insert is compatible with your model. A simpler solution is to place a plastic milk jug or brick in the toilet reservoir to reduce the usable reservoir volume.

Also available at hardware stores are improved ballcocks that maintain lower water levels in the tank, as well as eliminate leakage.

Many new homes utilize dual cycle toilets that employ two flush cycles- one for liquid wastes and the other for solid wastes. These toilets are not available in all areas yet.

In many states, water-saving toilets have become mandatory. Most old toilets used 3.5 to 5 gallons per flush, but since 1992, the national standard has been a maximum of 1.6 gallons. Check your system to determine if your toilets are of the new water saving design.
