Sand Filter Advantages and Disadvantages
Sand filters have several advantages:
- Treatment processes are well understood
- Several designs available
- They provide relatively consistent treatment
- They are relatively compact (recirculating sand filters
are smaller than single pass sand filters)
- Useful for individual and community/cluster systems
- They have been used to renovate failed systems (in other
states)
They also have considerations:
- Professional maintenance every 6-12 months is required
- Current design recommendations require sand (or crushed
glass) of a very specific size. This may be difficult to
find in certain areas.
- A water tight septic tank is absolutely necessary
- The system requires both electricity and an alarm system
